deviantART, the world’s largest online community for artists, was recently given a mission by Microsoft and Epic Games:
“Capture the soul-shattering spirit of Gears of War in your own original fan art wallpaper.”
This mission was a competition where deviantART members were invited to create a piece of work based on the above guideline in order to be in with a chance to win a prize of $10,000.00. Artists were allowed to submit their own piece or they could team up with fellow artists to submit a collaborative piece, a first for a deviantART competition. In addition Microsoft required at least one Gears of War character to be represented in a submitted composition, and artists were free to source information about the Gears universe from anywhere.
The winners of this competition were announced last week and we are pleased to be able to share with you here on here on gamersireland the winning entries;
The first place prize winner was “Bring It” by deviantART user Aeonsend. Aeonsend achieved the top prize of $10,000.00 USD in cash, an XBOX 360 Gears of War 3 Limited Console Bundle and loads of awesome deviantART swag and prizes. Judges from Epic Games called the piece “Stunning.” “Bring It” may be adapted into a wallpaper for a Windows Theme Pack so we may see this image popping up on a few screens around the office.
Second prize went to “Passage to Hell” by wwudesign who wins $1,000.00 in cash, Gears of War 3, and lots of great XBOX and deviantART prizes.
The third prize winner “Final Stand,” was created by JerMohler & Kapow2003 who shareD $750.00 and other prizes.
3000 pieces were submitted and it was down to deviantART to narrow the entry pool to the top 100 semi-finalists. Epic Games then voted on that selection to select the top three winners. We understand that there were a few honourable mentions, and in fairness it must have been tough to choose just 3 winners out of the large amount of high-quality artwork. The 97 semi-finalists who missed out on the top three positions received $200 USD and a copy of Gears of War 3.
Microsoft Studios co-funded the deviantART contest, which Epic Games helped support and judge. Additionally, Epic and deviantART teamed up to go behind the game and showcase the stunning art direction of the Gears of War series. A behind the scenes video which features interviews with the creative minds and hands behind Epic games is available below:
The top 100 entries can be viewed on the link below, which also allows access to larger sized images of every entry:
We have to say the winning image, “Bring It,” certainly deserves its victory. The image captures the hopeless spirit of the game while still encompassing the defiance of the central characters. In addition the inclusion of Lambent, Locust and a Corpser show faithfulness to the series the competition is based on.
Below are additional images from the top 100 that we felt were particularly good however do have a look at the above link to find more images that may identify more closely with your own visions of the Gears of War universe.
