Once again, the world is on the cusp of world war 3…. and there is only one unit that can save us all… The Ghost unit are finally back on our screens in what seems like an age since GRAW2, and they’ve come sporting new toys to play with In Ghost Recon Future Soldier.
So whats it all about this time?? Well from what i garnered from the techy spec-ops heavy lingo, There is a group of Russian Ultrnationalists that don’t like the way their country is being run…So they decide piss the world off by arms dealing around the globe, selling dirty nuclear bombs and setting them off over London. As per usual, the Americans aren’t happy about this so they send in the best of the best to aid the Russians fight. This fight will take you to Nigeria, Pakistan, Norway and of course Mother Russia. The story is pretty weak but it won’t effect your enjoyment of the game.
When you first play Ghost Recon Future Soldier (GRFS) the first thing you’ll think of, is it feels very familiar, like an old set of gloves… but do i want to wear those old gloves?? In this case i most certainly do. Yes it feels samey in parts, Its got the Clancy blood running through its veins, but the creators have added enough to inject new life into the series. Its still the third person team shooter you know, but Red Storm have changed enough to make it fresh. For one thing, you can play the whole campaign with 3 of your buddies online, calling out targets to each other and pulling off precise and calculated ops. That being said, the AI does a great job with your team if you decide to do it alone.
It would not be a Tom Clancy game without a wealth of cool gadgets and weapons to play with, and FS will not disappoint. I really hope that these toys are past the prototype stage!. Your team comes equipped with predator like active camo, sensor grenades, portable uav’s that help designate targets but also transforms into a remote RC car for ground recon. The new “gunsmith” deserves a mention too, this is were the player gets to modify each weapon. When i say modify… i should really say build from scratch! Red storm have given the player the ability replace every part of the weapon, from the stock barrel to the firing pins. These changes are not just cosmetic either, every alteration you make bring with it a new weapon variation. This is the GT of the gun world.
Some will play GRFS and think its gone Splinter cell mad!! And to certain extent they maybe right.. With the gadgets available to your team, its possible to go through some levels without you “the player” firing a single shot. This is because you are given a UAV early on in the game which you can recon all enemy units and “mark n execute” using only your team. Like splinter cell conviction, some will criticize this feature due to it making the game easier. I found that it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the game.
The campaign has a good 12 or 13 hours of gameplay which is decent enough, and because you’ve can tackle each mission by going guns blazing or all stealthy, really adds to the replay value. The game comes loaded with its very own “Horde mode” under the guise of guerrilla mode, in which you tack on 50 waves of increasingly difficult foes. This seems to be a prerequisite for war games these days. You can also take the fight online in your typical team battle multiplayer scenario modes. Be warned though, the uber skilled GRAW players are back enforce so expect to be handed your ass for a while before you get used to it.
If your a fan of the series then i reckon you will enjoy the experience, but it comes with a price tag…. the difficulty has somewhat suffered due to borrowing some of SC: Convictions cooler abilities. Being able to rely on 3 real people also makes it abit easier too. Over all Future Soldier breathes new life into the old dog, and in my opinion its better for it. Guerrilla mode was abit of a miss for me, it just doesn’t feel right in comparison to other franchise versions. The multiplayer online is very good but you need to put time into it. Well worth spending your hard earned cash on.
Ghost Recon Future Soldier is available now on all major systems.
